Chef Margot Janse kookte in het verleden als head chef in restaurant Le Quartier Francais in Franschoek Zuid Afrika. Dit restaurant stond destijds op nummer 41 in de World's 50 best restaurants! Zij werkt als executive chef nu samen met sommelier en wijn importeur Koen van der Plas. Koen was vroeger hoofd sommelier bij Interscaldes. Chef Jasper Hermans werkte eerder bij Aan de Poel in Amstelveen. Dit sterrenteam creëerde een 'spys'kaart geïnspireerd door inheemse Zuid-Afrikaanse en lokale Nederlandse ingrediënten.

In The Open Space Contemporary Art Museum, afgekort OSCAM, ligt de focus op het tonen van jong talent in de kunstindustrie. Dit museum gelegen aan het Bijlmerplein is een plek waar kunst, design en mode samenkomen. OSCAM is opgericht door Huma Kabakcı en werd een plek die draait om vakmanschap en het tonen van nieuwe en diverse ideeën. De tentoonstellingen en projecten van OSCAM wisselen regelmatig, waardoor hier altijd weer iets nieuws te zien is. Lopende projecten zijn onder andere de Writing Space, waar kunstenaars van verschillende achtergrond teksten aanbieden, of bijvoorbeeld project Edible Goods, waar voedsel als medium in kunst wordt onderzocht.

The owners aimed to create a fully equipped house with all possible amenities and a generous layout, ultimately resulting in a spacious complex of over 674 m² in total.

This spacious ground floor is elevated above the dike level, offering excellent privacy and beautiful unobstructed views of the Amstel River and the lovely park garden. The living area is notably expansive, featuring a roughly 100 m² living room that seamlessly flows into a large and well-positioned kitchen.
With a rear width of nearly 14 meters, the living room is extensively glazed and connects well with the outdoor terrace, while the kitchen is pleasantly situated on the street side. The first floor accommodates two children’s rooms and a bathroom. The master bedroom is situated along the longest sightline of the garden, allowing you to wake up to a beautiful view of your own green park.
This master bedroom also features a walk-in closet and a private bathroom with a bathtub, spacious shower, double vanity, and a toilet and bidet. The landing includes a built-in wardrobe with a laundry chute, ensuring that the laundry always ends up next to the washing machine.
On the second floor, there is a spacious attic room with a complete bathroom and ample storage space.

The plot
The plot, covering over 17.500 square meters, was designed in conjunction with the house by a landscape architect. This collaboration has created several beautiful sightlines within this private park. A winding path allows for a stroll through this beautifully landscaped park, which features a variety of trees and shrubs that have matured over the past twenty years into a fully developed park. The integration of various water features, which connect openly with the adjacent ditch, creates a harmonious blend of greenery and water.
The annex
The annex consists of a double garage with a self-contained office space at the rear. With its own entrance on the side, this office is both fiscally and practically appealing. This entrance also includes a toilet. The office itself is equipped with a pantry and has French doors leading to the garden.
On the upper floor, there is a self-contained apartment. This space is ideal for guests, live-in parents, a nanny, or an au pair. The apartment includes a living room, a complete kitchen, two bedrooms, and a bathroom.
What the owners will miss
Living on the Amstel River has been a privilege we’ve enjoyed for 40 years. After initially living on Amsteldijk Noord, we had the chance to build our dream home on Amsteldijk Zuid in 2002—a chance we couldn’t pass up. Still within biking distance of Amsterdam, the northern part of Amsteldijk Zuid is an ideal place to live. It’s a beautiful, tranquil environment, and at number 79b, it’s closer to shops and schools, the row of restaurants and terraces along the Amstel in Ouderkerk, the golf course, and closer to stunning walking, biking, and boating routes. Most importantly, it’s situated away from Schiphol’s flight paths, so there’s no airplane noise, yet it’s only 12 minutes from Schiphol and perfectly accessible via main roads to Utrecht, The Hague, etc. All this on a plot of nearly 1.8 hectares. Our own unique estate under the smoke of Amsterdam with all the space, greenery, and complete privacy.
In the construction, we made no compromises. The design had to fit along the Amstel and be equipped with all comforts and luxuries. The design is inspired by a farmhouse with a thatched roof but is more open to allow for plenty of light. Despite the 674 m² of living space, it maintains a light, playful appearance by utilizing the space underground. We also spared no expense on technology. Although it’s much cheaper to implement nowadays, the functionality of the home automation system remains up-to-date. The principle was—and still is—that all functions (lighting, audio/video, sauna, gate, etc.) can be controlled from anywhere in the house. This was achieved with professionals from New York, familiar with higher standards and requirements there.
We have entered a different phase of life, will spend more than half our time abroad, and want to adapt our living situation accordingly. But we will miss living here greatly. Opening the curtains in the morning and enjoying the view of our own park, the meadows, and the golf course. The sound of the cuckoo and other many birds. Evening aperitifs on the terrace at sunset over our park and meadows. Sunrise over the Amstel on the other side. Our bike rides along the Amstel, Waver, Gein, and Vecht rivers. Our outings with the sloop on those same waterways or through the canals of Amsterdam. Jogging along the Amstel. Walking or biking or taking the boat to a terrace in Ouderkerk. Walking in our own park, or children playing with friends in the maze, on the trampoline, the swing, the XXL chess game, the fruit orchard, and the ponds. Or lazy Sunday afternoons in our own spa.
But biking to the theater or a good restaurant in Amsterdam will remain, as will all the luxury we are accustomed to. And it’s comforting to know that the new residents will enjoy our beautiful home just as much.
