Architecture
In the 17th century, the first Dutch architects returned from study trips to Italy. Inspired by the forms of classical antiquity, they adapted these to the Dutch taste and the available building materials with a sense of simplicity. The facades resemble temples, featuring columns, pilasters, cornices, and pediments, but the execution is stricter and more monumental. Classical ornaments are no longer scattered across the entire facade; instead, they are limited to a few specific places. Notable are the small round or oval windows, known as oeils-de-boeuf or “cow eyes.”
Prinsengracht 858 is a national monument, a house with an early 18th-century facade, with an upper floor and straight cornice from the second half of the 19th century. The doorframe dates from the late 18th century. The facade of this national monument appears to be a “normal” canal house, yet its entrance and staircase are spacious. A pleasant staircase in the middle of the building provides an easy route to the third floor.
