The building at Da Costakade 180 is part of a block of five buildings, each consisting of five floors and an attic. These floors were originally used as separate residences.
The architecture of these buildings can be characterized as Neo-Renaissance, a style that was highly popular in the second half of the 19th century, drawing inspiration from the Dutch Renaissance period between roughly 1530 and 1630. Architects of that era often used horizontal layers of natural stone between the brickwork and frequently incorporated stepped gables.
By referencing the Dutch Renaissance, 19th-century architects created a distinctly national style that could also be linked to the struggle against Spanish rule, making it perfectly aligned with the rising sense of nationalism.
Key features of the Neo-Dutch Renaissance:
