Architecture
The building at Kerkstraat 88 was constructed as a single unit around 1782 in an atypical Neorenaissance architectural style for the neighborhood. Characteristic of the building and this style is the use of a brick facade combined with various natural stone details and richly detailed facade anchors. The facade further features characteristics of symmetry and detailing typical of the Neorenaissance style, such as arched windows and decorative elements above the window frames. The facade of this building is a “lijstgevel” (flat-front facade), which is characterized by a straight, often simple upper edge (the list) that caps the facade. In this case, a distinct cornice is visible at the top of the facade.
The list facade was a common type of facade in urban architecture in the Netherlands, especially in townhouses and residential buildings. Over the years, the front facade of the building has been modified several times to suit the functionality of, for example, a workshop or shop.
In 2010, a large-scale renovation took place, during which the structure and exterior shell were thoroughly addressed. The foundation was also restored. The entire renovation was conducted under the guidance of architect André van Stigt, who is known primarily for renovation projects, including a number of schools in Amsterdam, the Conservatorium Hotel, Apollohallen, and the Film Museum.

Kerkstraat, gerestaureerd door meesterarchitect André Van Stigt van het gerenommeerde architectenbureau Van Stigt, is met veel respect voor het originele pand gerenoveerd. De woonkeuken is altijd onze lievelingsplek geweest, een sfeervolle plek voor diners. De woonkamer, met zijn hogere plafond, biedt veel meer ruimtelijkheid.
De keuken en woonkamer zijn beiden onze favoriete plekken in het huis. Maar ook zeker het dakterras met het uitzicht over de stad.
Kerkstraat is een unieke straat met eenrichtingsverkeer, midden in het centrum en toch een oase van rust. De lijstenmaker beneden is een perfecte buur, en met de beste koffie van Bocca vonden wij de buurt altijd geweldig.
Aanraders in de buurt zijn Bocca voor koffie, Red voor surf en turf, Soep Enzo voor een gezonde lunch, en Stach voor snacks.
Als we afscheid nemen, zullen we de herinnering aan Kerkstraat als een heerlijk groot huis, waar je toch in elke kamer heel knus voelt, koesteren.
