The building at Minervaplein is a stunning example of the Amsterdam School style, characterized by its expressive shapes, rich details, and the use of brick. Blaauw had designed a total of eight blocks; however, due to the economic crisis of the 1930s and the outbreak of World War II, it wasn’t until the 1950s that all eight façades surrounding the square were completed. The Minervalaan owes its width to the role assigned to it by Berlage in his original Plan Zuid: the role of the “Station Street.” The planned station at the axis of the Minervalaan, now Station Zuid, was only built in the 1970s.
