Neighborhood Guide
With its Amsterdam School-style façades, the pre-war house of Anne Frank on Merwedeplein, and the Hilwis complex on Victorieplein – one of Europe's first skyscrapers – the Rivierenbuurt occupies a historic place in our city. Constructed in the 1920s and '30s as part of Berlage's Plan Zuid, the neighborhood is now a protected cityscape. Over the years, Scheldestraat has become the district's center. The nautical brasserie Vis aan de Schelde, in particular, draws culinary enthusiasts from both inside and outside the city. The same is true for ice cream parlors Venetië and Pisa IJs, which reopen their doors every spring. The theater festival De Parade sets up camp every summer in Martin Luther King Park, the neighborhood's green backyard with views over the Amstel River.

De Vecht
I always find the Rivierenbuurt to be a pleasant area. I live there myself, and it’s great fun to live here. It’s the ideal mix of tranquility and liveliness; in the immediate vicinity, there is a rich offering of shops, delicatessens, and boutiques. As soon as you enter one of the residential areas, you immediately notice the calmness. From the apartment at Vechtstraat 161-house, you’re just a few minutes away from the Amstel River or Rijnstraat. The ground lease has been bought off indefinitely.

Design vision
In 2017, this apartment underwent a complete renovation. At that time, a new kitchen and bathroom were installed, and a second bedroom was also created. To bring in extra daylight into the living room and kitchen, the original en-suite door was repurposed into a window and placed high up in the kitchen wall. Additionally, it is possible to deepen the basement, thereby creating additional living space.
Living and cooking
The living room, situated at the rear with an eastern orientation, enjoys morning sun. Within the same space is the open kitchen, renovated in 2017 and equipped with modern built-in appliances. The spacious living and dining area seamlessly connects to the garden, allowing for a smooth transition between indoors and outdoors.
Sleeping and bathing
The first bedroom at the front of the apartment provides space for a wardrobe and dresser, while the second bedroom offers a tranquil spot next to the garden and living room, ideal for use as a study or office. The bathroom, strategically located in the middle of the apartment, features a walk-in shower, sink, and toilet.
The garden
The spacious east-facing garden offers ample room for a lounge set and dining table, while a shed provides additional storage space for all your belongings.

What the owners will miss
The reason we moved to Vechtstraat in 2007 is because we found the charm and authentic character of the 1930s houses beautiful and pleasant. The neighborhood is quiet and cozy, with supermarkets and shops just around the corner; there are also good cafes and restaurants nearby like those on Rijnstraat, Maasstraat, and Scheldestraat. Over the years, the neighborhood has continued to develop with more high-quality restaurants, pleasant cafes, and better shops. At the end of summer, the adjacent Martin Luther King Park hosts the annual summer festival De Parade. Besides being cozy, the park is beautifully green, and being next to the Amstel River, it’s great for strolls and summer picnics. Driving out of the city is easy by car, and within a 15-minute bike ride, you can reach Museumplein or the city center, as well as Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. It’s also a child-friendly neighborhood with plenty of playgrounds and several schools within walking distance. Over the years, more young families have moved into the area. We are very fond of the neighborhood and its pleasant residents, which is why we have no desire to leave.
