Architecture
The most popular architectural style in the second half of the 19th century is the Neo-Renaissance, a period in which the Dutch Renaissance of the 16th century was reinterpreted. Characteristic of Neo-Renaissance are the horizontal, natural stone layers between the brickwork and the step gables, almost indistinguishable from those of the Renaissance period. The historical sentiment was now emphasized by even more extravagant use of decorations. The same applied to shops, which aimed to stand out to attract the public.
The Vondelstraat is architecturally a very special street with a rich variety of facades, richly detailed in nineteenth-century styles. In 2012, the foundation and cellar brick were completely renewed and the exterior painting of the whole building has been done in 2023.
